Treaty of Waitangi

Marcus: Hi welcome to our treaty of waitangi Speech we will be talking all about the treaty where it was signed.

Josh:  The  treaty was signed 6th of February 1840 by representatives of the british crown and various maori chiefs.

Thomas:Maori came from the eastern polynesia  in 1250 to 1300 CE in many waves of wakas threw this time.

Marcus: The maori language is closely related to the cook island languages.

Josh: Each wave settled in many different places in NZ there was only one tribe that settled in the south island.  

Thomas:king tawhiao was the 2nd  maori  king and settled in Alexandra (Pirongia).

Marcus: Muskets were a very  dangerous weapon in the 1800’s not many Maori people had a gun but if they did it would be a musket British used muskets to defend villages like alexandra.

Josh:  Waikato was a main part of the british colony Pirongia (Alexandra) was the british side of the river The mountain was maori side or the river they would trade on the river banks On 11 July 1871 he decided to cross the river with a gun as a peace offering the british saw him from the redoubt  crossing and informed the army but the government told there was no need they meet in the town centre King tawhiao dropped the gun   for a peace offering
